The French House

The southwest - a region known as The Lot - is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions of France.

I fell in love with its green pastures and stone villages when I first visited in the year 2000, and at the end of my six-month stay I bought a small village house in Frayssinet-le-Gelat.

Sadly I am only able to spend a few months a year in the house, which means it is available for rental as a holiday gite.

Frayssinet-le-Gelat is a small village located two hours drive inland from Bordeaux and two hours north of Toulouse. The nearest airport is Bergerac (40 minutes drive) and it is five hours by train from Paris (the nearest train stations are Gourdon and Cahors).

The centre of the village is a crossroad dominated by an imposing Romanesque church with a memorial to the villagers who lost their lives in both World Wars.

The village has a new supermarket selling everything from fresh cheese and wine to wild mushrooms (cèpes) from the local woodland (in season). It is open seven days a week from 9 until 7.30 pm but is closed for 2 hours in the middle of the day. A travelling boucherie (butchery) sells fresh meat from a van in the carpark on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.

There is also excellent boulangerie selling crusty bread and delicious cakes (closed Mondays) and a bar (Le Relais) where locals meet for a drink before lunch or in the evening. There is a small restaurant (Le Gelatin) that has excellent, simple meals and homemade pizzas at weekends.

As of 2008 a mediatheque opened offering internet facilities and a small library.

There is also a charming lake (plan d’eau) nearby with an outdoor bar and restaurant in the summer.

From Frayssinet-le-Gelat it is an easy drive into the Dordogne to visit famous towns such as Domme and Sarlat, and within The Lot are many historic attractions including the pilgrimage township of Rocamadour. There are tourist information centres at Puy L’Eveque, Villefranche-du-Perigord, Gourdon and Cahors.

The house is simple and cosy. The main floor is one large room with a well-equipped kitchen, a dining area and comfortable chairs around a new slow combustion wood fireplace. The bathroom is also newly renovated and located on this ground level. Upstairs are two double bedrooms (two couples are idea); there also two single beds in the attic that can be brought down if there are children staying.

There is a sheltered small courtyard at the back of the house where meals can be eaten outdoors during the summer.

The house has a television (French networks only), broadband connection to the internet (BYO computer) a phone and rental includes linen and a fully equipped kitchen.
